Off The Grid Living For Beginners

Off The Grid Living For Beginners

Are you considering moving off-grid, but aren’t really sure what it is, much less if it’s right for you? Read on for a brief introduction to off-grid living.

What Does Off Grid Mean?

You may have heard the term grid before when referring to electricity. There is an electric grid that connects most houses and businesses, providing them with electricity.

A water grid exists, as does a gas grid. Choosing to live off-grid means choosing to live a life that is disconnected from the utilities that many take for granted.

Rather than city water, off-grid homesteaders usually have their own well. They may rely on solar and wind energy for electricity.

Those living off-grid prefer self-sustainability over the convenience that living on the grid can provide.

Why Do People Choose To Live Off Grid?

People choose to live off-grid for any number of reasons. Some have an inherent distrust of the government and feel safer living disconnected from society.

Others have a deep internal need to be fully self-sustainable and not reliant on anyone or anything else.

And others still are drawn to the idea of a more simple, survival-focused way of living. The decision to live off-grid is deeply personal, and only you know if the lifestyle is right for you.

What Does It Take To Move Off Grid?

Moving off-grid is a lifestyle change and a drastic one at that. It requires giving up many modern comforts and learning to live off the land.

It takes a knowledge of foraging, gardening, hunting, building, survival skills, and so much more to successfully live off-grid.

The first thing you should do is arm yourself with knowledge. Start reading everything you can about the lifestyle.

Moving off-grid also takes a substantial amount of money. You’ll need land, a cabin, food and supplies, and whatever else your family requires to survive.

This may not be a problem if you plan to continue working, but if you are planning on giving up your job you will need a sizeable bank account.

Another thing you’ll need when moving off-grid is a good location. Ideally, you’ll want somewhere with winters that aren’t too harsh and summers that aren’t too hot. That might not be realistic for you, however.

If you need to stay close to your current location and the conditions aren’t ideal, look into how to prepare for them.

There are things you can do to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer, for example.

I’m Not Ready To Move Off Grid. Is There Anything I Can Do In The Meantime?

Continue learning all you can about the survival lifestyle. Learn about first aid and maybe even take a wilderness first responder course that teaches you basic survival skills while in the wilderness and without modern medical equipment.

Learn about bushcrafting and how to make items out of the natural world. Keep learning as much as you can about all aspects of survivalism.

In addition to learning, save money. As mentioned above, living off-grid is surprisingly expensive. Saving money now can help you be better prepared for later.

As you save money, you will start to feel closer to your goal of living off-grid, too. This is a great way to tangibly see your progress towards this new lifestyle.
